Four years ago today, a Chevy Cruze overheated on the side of the road—and everything changed.
The car had only been bought five days earlier. It was a long workday, and the owner was exhausted, wearing a hotel housekeeping uniform, trying to make it home with nothing more than hope and water in the coolant tank. Someone told her to swing by a parts store, grab antifreeze, and just refill it when needed. Simple advice. A short detour.
She passed two other parts stores on the way—but for no particular reason, she pulled into Advance Auto.
That decision changed her life.
Swift was the store manager that day. He saw her walk in—purple hair, clearly frustrated, clearly tired—and told the rest of the crew, “She’s mine—I got this one.” He stepped outside, popped the hood, and diagnosed the problem in minutes. Years of experience as a mechanic made it second nature. The thermostat was cracked. The sensor was out. Coolant was leaking fast.
She hadn’t come in looking for that kind of help. She wasn’t expecting anyone to take a real look. But Swift didn’t just hand her a jug of fluid and send her on her way—he explained what was wrong, how to fix it, and even offered to do the job himself for $70. But at the time, $70 might as well have been $700. She had just spent everything she had on the car. She was getting back on her feet, one step at a time. So instead of taking the offer, she thanked him, bought the part, and went home. And she fixed it herself.
With a tiny toolbox, two hand wrenches, and a lamp dragged out after dark, she replaced the thermostat alone. It took five or six hours. But it got done.
A few days later, Swift followed up about the car. What started as a quick thank you turned into a real conversation. Then another. And another. Before either of them realized what was happening, they’d built something.
A friendship. A connection. A partnership.
And eventually, a business.
That one overheated engine led to everything that followed: a move to Southeast Texas, the launch of Swift’s Automotive, and the life they’re still building now—side by side, one job at a time. Swift’s Automotive wasn’t born in a boardroom. It didn’t come with investors or a 10-year plan. It started with a woman trying to survive and a man who simply showed up to help.
Over the past four years, there’s been no shortage of struggle. Moving to a new state with nothing but tools and grit. Navigating personal losses and setbacks. Learning how to run a business while still living paycheck to paycheck. But through all of it, one thing has stayed the same: the commitment to doing things right—for the people who need it most.
This business was never just about cars. It’s about people. It's about showing up when someone’s stranded in a parking lot. It's about explaining things clearly and honestly. It's about being the kind of service they wished they had when they needed help most.
Swift’s Automotive was built from a breakdown—but it’s grown through intention. And there’s still so much more to come.
