The Pit Stop with Swift’s Automotive
Most car owners keep up with oil changes — or at least try to. But what about the other stuff?
There’s a long list of lesser-known maintenance tasks that don’t get nearly as much attention — but when skipped, can lead to breakdowns, poor performance, and expensive repairs.
Here are 7 key maintenance items we often find overlooked when servicing vehicles in Southeast Texas — and why you shouldn’t ignore them.
Your brake fluid doesn’t last forever. Over time, it absorbs moisture — especially in hot, humid places like Southeast Texas. That moisture can lower braking performance and even corrode internal components in your braking system.
Most manufacturers recommend replacing brake fluid every 2–3 years, but most drivers have never done it. If your brakes feel spongy, soft, or inconsistent, this is one of the first things we check during diagnostics.
What can go wrong:
Corrosion in brake lines and calipers
Reduced stopping power
Brake system failure in emergencies
Your cabin air filter keeps dirt, dust, pollen, and mold spores out of your vents. A dirty filter reduces airflow, makes your AC work harder, and can lead to funky smells inside your vehicle — especially during the Texas summer.
We see a lot of filters that haven’t been changed in years, packed with grime and gunk. Replacing it is cheap, quick, and makes a huge difference in air quality and AC performance.
What can go wrong:
Poor airflow through vents
Strain on blower motor
Musty smells from mold buildup
Transmission fluid doesn’t just lubricate gears — it also keeps your transmission cool. Over time, it breaks down from heat and friction, especially in stop-and-go driving or when towing in high temps.
Most automakers recommend service every 30k to 60k miles, but many drivers never touch it. If your car starts shifting rough or slipping gears, old fluid could be the reason — and replacing the fluid is a lot cheaper than replacing the transmission.
What can go wrong:
Rough or delayed shifting
Transmission overheating
Early transmission failure
Just because your battery holds a charge doesn’t mean the connection is clean. Corrosion on battery terminals can prevent the car from starting, cause intermittent electrical problems, and even drain your battery.
We’ve been called to no-start jobs where the only issue was a layer of corrosion that blocked current. Cleaning terminals is a simple fix that can save you time, money, and a jump-start in a parking lot.
What can go wrong:
Car won’t start
Battery drains quickly
Alternator works harder than it should
Uneven tire wear is something we spot often — especially on front-wheel-drive vehicles and trucks with unrotated tires. If you skip regular rotation, tires wear faster on one side, reduce traction, and can affect handling.
Most shops recommend rotation every 5,000–7,500 miles, but it’s often skipped. Not only does rotation extend tire life, but balancing also prevents vibration and improves ride quality.
What can go wrong:
Uneven or rapid tire wear
Reduced fuel economy
Shaky or unstable ride at highway speeds
Coolant keeps your engine from overheating, but it also prevents corrosion inside the cooling system. Over time, coolant breaks down and loses its ability to protect — especially in harsh weather.
In Southeast Texas, where heat is no joke, having good coolant is critical. A flush every 2–5 years, depending on your vehicle, helps keep your radiator, thermostat, and water pump in good shape.
What can go wrong:
Engine overheating
Rust inside radiator or water pump
Cracked hoses or blown head gasket
Wipers are one of the cheapest parts to replace — but still one of the most ignored. In coastal or humid areas like ours, rubber blades dry out fast, crack, and leave streaks across your windshield.
Replacing them once a year keeps your visibility clear when storms roll in — and in Texas, that can happen any month of the year.
What can go wrong:
Poor visibility in rain
Streaks or scratching on windshield
Blade detachment while driving
Staying ahead of car problems isn’t just about oil changes — it’s about watching the small things that can turn into big repairs when ignored. A little maintenance goes a long way.
